Murderers of Journalists Arraigned in Court
On April 7, 2010, five suspects arrested in connection with the murder
on 20 September 2009 of Mr. Bayo Ohu, an assistant news editor of the
privately-owned daily newspaper, The Guardian, were arraigned at a
Magistrate Court in Lagos charged with the murder and armed robbery.

AUC/EC Agree to Abandon
Pan African Media Observatory Idea
The African Union Commission (AUC) and the
European Commission (EC) announced on March 24, 2010 in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, that they would abandon their plan to establish a Pan African
Media Observatory (PAMO), following criticisms of the project by media
experts and representatives of African and international organizations.

Nigerian Sharia Court
Bans Online Discussion of Amputation
On March 22, 2010, Justice Lawal Muhammed of Magajin Gari Sharia Court
in Kaduna, North-western Nigeria banned the Civil Rights Congress of
Nigeria, a not-for-profit NGO from hosting discussions on the amputation
of Buba Bello Jangebe on the online social networking sites Facebook and
Twitter pending the determination of the suit instituted by a pro-Sharia
group, the Association of Muslim Brotherhood of Nigeria.

Police Parade ‘Suspected Killers’ of
Journalist
On March 15, 2010, the police
paraded three suspects who they claimed were killers of the late Mr.
Bayo Ohu, former Assistant News Editor of the private daily newspaper ‘The
Guardian’. The suspects are Dada Yemi Adesanya (23 years old), Ganiu
Suleman (28 years) and Idris Balogun (26 years).

Crowd of Mourners Assaults Radio
Reporter
Mr. Murtala Sani, a reporter with the Federal Radio Corporation of
Nigeria (FRCN) on March 8, 2010 narrowly escaped being killed by a crowd
of mourners while on assignment to cover the mass funeral of victims of
the March 7 massacre in Dogo Nahawa, Plateau State in North central
Nigeria. He escaped the assault from the crowd when it was dispersed by

Journalists Kidnapped
Three journalists with the South African TV channel
Supersport were on March 1, 2010 kidnapped near Owerri, the Imo State
capital in South-east Nigeria. The journalists:
Nick Greyling, a sound engineer; Alexander
Effiong, a cameraman;
and Bowie Attamah, a sports commentator were
returning from covering a football match in
